Key points

  • If a surface is too absorbent it pulls the linseed oil out of the paint, which dries tacky and loses saturation.
  • Naples yellow and grey calm the colour explosion before titanium white takes the wedding dress into white.
  • Two brands of titanium white go head to head on the same painting.
  • Ultramarine is so strong it can swallow the white, so you keep coming back and building up.
  • Going to a smaller brush can lose the energy of the bigger strokes, so know when to stop.

Just pops back into my mind. But honestly, I doubt it. supposed to be putting this on. Walking on the broken glass. Song gets stuck. Song gets stuck. Song gets stuck in your head. Turn on for me. Yes, it will. Do we have sound? We do have sound. Lovely. Lovely. Let's chuck that on there. Perfecto. So, I'm banking on remembering what that is, but I don't know right now. also one wild card, and this is a bit annoying, is the plates that I found myself in possession of these paper plates. Be careful what you wish for because if I show you this, this paint is a little bit cooked.

Now, bring it right up here so you can see. You see how it's got those kind of like staining happening around the oils? It's leeching out. So, what's happening there is there's a specific ratio of pigment to linseed oil in oil paints. And if you put it on a surface that is too absorbent, it'll pull that oil out of the pigment and make it dry in a more tacky way. You'll lose color saturation and beauty. not all of it, but definitely a portion of it. And that's because these plates are matte. They're not gloss. Gloss will repel the oil. I thought they'd be all right.

They're not. So way to fix that. Porcelain's your winner. Porcelain is always your winner. But that's a mistake that I have made today for today. So, we'll use part of it, but the majority of this paint is now cooked because it doesn't work well on these plates. It doesn't happen immediately. It's like a slow burn kind of slow burn effect over an hour or two. And sometimes if it's some surfaces that haven't been gessoed at all, the effect could take days, but it will happen months. I was actually talking with my photographer. He was saying he was actually complaining to me saying that someone brought in a picture from him to photograph and he said, "This is literally leeching.

You can't sell this. This is will not see out the decade and you're going to sell it to someone for $30,000. That's not fair." I'm with him. That is not fair. That is not fair. Hello Harry. Welcome in. And Harry, I like your attitude towards my drawing. It's lovely to have you here, you legend. So, we're currently in two places. We're on TikTok at the moment and we are streaming live to YouTube. YouTube gives us slightly higher quality for the replay and it also gives us landscape so you can see the full spectrum but so you're not enclosed to the horizontal vertical format. So depends what you're into.

If you want vertical you're in the right place on TikTok. If you want horizontal, you're in the right place on YouTube. It's really up to you to decide which one is best for you. Hold on. Let me just get this clipped on properly. Walking on this the broken glass in there like that. Yeah, there we go. Whoopsy daisies. Make sure it's tucked in. Is that going to stay there? It's definitely not. It's definitely not. just battling away with tech. You're actually supposed to have another little gizmo that connects. This goes down your pocket and then you have a cord that comes up, but it's just too much of a headache, guys.

It doesn't improve the quality. It just gets this little annoying fluff ball away from you so you look cooler. But, unless you believe that the little fluff ball makes you look cool, in which case you're on the right track. each to their own. Walking on the broken glass, guys. Just do a little bit of adjustment here. Put the Let me bring you around to here. There we go. Lovely. And then flick that there. Ah, this place is the lovely Bay of Plenty. And out in that direction to the middle of nowhere, you'll end up in British Columbia. Colombia. British Columbia though. So that's Canada technically.

I mean, not even technically, factually, it's Canada. We should be wearing gloves right now, but we'll just be extra careful. Stand back a bit. Maybe about here. I pull this across. Bear with me team. There we go. That's the position. That's good for me. All right. Keep tighty and I can stand on back. Walking on in the broken glass. It's a good song that one to get stuck in your head. Once it's in there, it's staying. Oh, that's what I went for. A stool or a chair? Cuz I was getting tired. Well, took me so long to remember. I've actually got me energy back now.

Oh, now it's all coming back to me. It's all coming back to me now. I still haven't painted a Princess Diana portrait. That's true. I haven't. and while I appreciate your passion for it, I'm not leaping out of my chair to do it. there's lots of pictures of her already that was in there. If she reached out personally and said, "You know what? I'm keen for this." Then I'd leap on that. I'm not sure if she can do that. but if someone of the royal family said, "You know what? We really want this," then we might leap on that with more fervor. But, as of right now, they haven't contacted me.

It's weird. so we'll hold fire. The royal family's playing hard to get, I think. I think I'm being told here that I need to step out of my comfort zone. I think step I think painting Princess Diana from a photo is very much stepping into a comfort zone. would be my take but I could be wrong. Walking on, walking on with the broken glass. You'll always find that those yellows are just a little bit weaker on that pigment front. Not the end of the world. They're just a little bit less strong. I think that's why Van Go got so excited about them back in the day.

They got good quality yellows and they just really wanted to put them everywhere, you know. who's that there? Tim. Welcome on in Tim. There we go. Gotcha. Perfecto. Just trying to get myself in a stance where I can actually It's actually a lot of the painting I do is from a 45. If you can, you want to be straight on from it when you're trying to shape the composition. It just helps get those extra little finer bits the right place standing off. If he can be like that, it's like a boxing stance. There's about right. Walking on, walking on with the broken glass. Here we are.

God, yellow could be gorgeous though. If applied right, yellow is an absolute game changer. Yeah, it's a brighter kind of wedding shot, so it's got that pastely tone to a lot of it. But her dress will once we get a whole bunch of titanium enter more of a white realm. But at the moment, this kind of explosion of color is fun. It's we've got Naples yellow and gray to add. Then we're going to grab a smaller brush and start doing some small little cut bits. But it's also thicker at the moment. So I'm mixing it. Just raw dog thick juicy textured Sorry guys, just bumping you around a little bit.

There you go. Here you go. Spin that there. All right, team. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. The lighting is playing up a little bit cuz it's quite glossy, so it'll shine a wee bit, but Cheers. What up with that smaller brush? Here we are. Next color I need to attack it with. There's a whole bunch of ultramarine Here we go. Now, let's get rid of that and let's swap to a plate. D. Going to grab that stool now, too. Just something so I can just put my legs at a bit more of an angle. Should be in here. Where are you hiding, little chair? There we go.
